The ancient Caribbean creation we know as a hammock is still a standard furnishing in most homes in many areas of Latin America. Throughout the years its popularity spread all over the world and what once was a woven bed made from Hamack tree bark can now be found in virtually any backyard, in a multitude of fabrics and shades.
Hammocks can be found in several styles and varieties and have numerous uses around the globe. Most modern kinds are machine made from a synthetic blend of cotton and nylon. People commonly hang these swing-like seats between two trees and use them to enjoy outdoor reading, to rest, sleep and relax, quite often imagining they were on a sultry island, swaying gently in a tropical breeze alongside the water, while drinking a refreshing cocktail.
The traditional rope hammock, attached to two leafy trees, is still a fixture on summertime lawns, at many lakeside or ocean front vacation homes or resorts. Activity specific hammocks are often made of a more lightweight fabric. They are easy to carry and can include other special features like mosquito nets, sun protective canopies, storage bags or a caddy. The ultimate hammock accessory would be the rocker kit, a simple pulley system that enables the hammock to rock whilst sitting in it!
As time went by hammock styles and fabric options have grown. From traditional knotted-cotton techniques to high-performance fabric slings to those attached to a free standing metal frame with or without wheels, there's one for every taste and pocket. With a pattern, a crochet hook and cotton yarn you could even make one yourself. Hammocks are so versatile and bring so much joy they truly make for a great summer-time gift, even if for one-self.
