Page 5.3: Candles

If you would ask someone what a candle is, you may get an answer fairly quickly. It may go as follows: a candle is a light and heat source that consists of a wick embedded in a solid block of wax. If you then would ask what the “meaning” of a candle is, you may have to wait a bit longer for an explanation.

Throughout history candles have always been a very important part of the cultures around the world. We all, at one time or another have used candles to create an atmosphere, to pray or to help a wish come true and feel that the flame represents the source of our creation, our inner light. Burning candles bring consolation, inspiration, and peace of mind and those are indeed some of the major reasons why people today buy and give candles.

Candles are relatively inexpensive and come in different shapes. Pillar candles are solid and self standing. Dinner candles are tapered and securely placed in holders. Gel candles are produced from gelled mineral oils and synthetic hydrocarbons and are usually poured into shaped containers. Floating candles do exactly what you would think. Specialty candles are different and unique and usually show up in 3 dimensional shapes. Votive candles are square or cylindrical in shape and burn safely in heat resistant containers. Tea light candles are smaller and are molded inside a cylindrical metal container to contain the melting wax. These small candles are used in food warmers or are placed in special designed decorative tea light holder. Luminaria candles are for use outdoors and can often be seen at Christmas time. Some candles are beautifully scented, others hold jewelry, symbols of friendship and love.

The color of a candle also seems to have significance and it has been said that these shades influence our health, thought and actions. The only way to find out if there is indeed some truth to these magic powers is to try it out. No matter what the result, mankind cannot live without candles. We do need them for their symbolic values, be it at a wedding, a christening or a romantic dinner. They give us light and warmth during an emergency situation and set the mood whenever we have the need to feel good inside. Don’t believe it? Keep looking… somewhere is a candle just for you!
